Unit Camp 2015

Cadets had the opportunity to participate in the annual Unit Camp 2015. Here are the thoughts and reflections of the groups.

This year's unit camp has been a wonderful experience. We got to know and bond with our group mates better. It was also a great opportunity to interact with our group mates from different levels and forge new bonds between one another.

As a group, we did many different activities together and through these activities, we learnt the importance of teamwork, perseverance and was able to work together better as the camp progressed, it was not easy taking care of the eggs or rifles by making sure it would not get stolen or broken but we still tried our best and this also reminded us the importance of our responsibility for our own things.

We may have made mistakes along the way like getting our flag stolen, but at the end of the day, we learnt to take responsibility much much more. From the minesweeper and warrior's challenge activities, we had much fun together and got to have the experience of working together despite our different skills and abilities. The hike provided us with the opportunity to bind together as senior and junior and we had lots of fun. Campfire was especially memorable as the play we put up was really funny and though we made mistakes in front of everyone, we put our heart and soul into it to make it as entertaining as we could, together as a team.

We felt that campfire was extremely unforgettable as it was our first time learning all the campfire songs and we had a lot of fun with our seniors. Through fire drill in the morning, it has reminded us to be alert and to be prepared in times of emergency. Overall, unit camp was a great experience with lots of good memories.

This year's unit camp was really meaningful and eventful. Both Secondary 1s and 2s were able to know each other better through the camp especially during the hike as we talked to one another and learnt some cheers. We also interacted a lot during various games and meal times. We were better able to take note of our surroundings as we had to take care of our rifles, group flag and the eggs given to the Sec 1s. It thought us the importance of being responsible, be it for our belongings, my juniors or actions. We made mistakes, for example like letting the flag and rifle be taken. It is really difficult to be able to take care of so many things simultaneously, but we should still be aware of our surroundings.

The camp was somewhat of a wakeup call to the Sec 2s as it shows that we are no longer juniors anymore, and it is our turn to now take on the role of NCOs and lead our juniors. We have to set a good example because we want our juniors to grow up disciplined and be able to be future NCOs as well. It is important for the Sec 2s to be a good role model for our juniors, especially since we are in charge of the CCA next year, we need to set a good example for our juniors to follow. It is also a given that we need to be more initiative. During the camp, there was a lot of times where nobody dared to reply or ask for permission to discuss, time extension, etc. Also, we tend to hesitate before replying to our NCOs. This proves that we need to step out of our comfort zone.

Throughout the camp, we, the sec 2s, learnt that it is important to be more responsible as we have to take care of our juniors’ wellbeing and our group flag. It was even so for the first day of camp as we had to take care of our rifle at the same time as well.

During the second day, the sec 1s were handed 3 eggs each for the hike. We were not allowed to hold their eggs for them. However, we have to make sure the sec 1s take good care of their eggs because we would be held responsible if the eggs broke. The unit camp serves as a good opportunity to bond with the sec 1s.

Although the first day of the camp, our group was a bit awkward with one another and was quite quiet, we managed to interact and know each other more by the end of the camp through game sessions, hike, and other activities. Game sessions also taught us about teamwork. With teamwork, task can be fulfilled faster and easier. We were actually quite nervous about our campfire performance as we were not very confident. However, we were all quite satisfied with how our performance turned out.

The fire drill also taught us about the importance of alertness and that we should leave no men behind. We learn to be responsible for our teammates and wake them up and not run away ourselves just to ensure our safety. We learn to make sure every single group mate is with us before evacuating. As for us, the sec 1s, we had learnt the importance of teamwork, perseverance and responsibility. We have a shared responsibility to take care of our group flag in order to prevent it from getting stolen. We have also learnt to be more responsible for our own belongings as we have to bear the responsibility if our flag gets stolen or the eggs cracked during the camp.

On the day of the hike, we have to carry 3 eggs and at the same time, cannot let it crack. We feel that this is not an easy task as eggs crack easily. We also learnt to have teamwork as we had to work with every single groupmate to take care of each other, our group flag as well as the three eggs especially during the hike. We enjoyed the games a lot where we interacted more as a group and had fun at the same time. For the hike, we felt that it was very tiring. Despite feeling tired, all of us persevered and continued walking and managed to completed the hike. This hike has taught us that perseverance is very important as it taught us not to give up halfway.

We think that this camp is a good learning experience and an eye opener for us as it has helped us to become a better person and student. As a group, we had known and learnt more about one another through the 3 days 2 night camp and this experience will never be forgotten.

For the Secondary 2s, the unit camp was tougher and exciting than last year. It was a meaningful one and we got to learn lots of values along the way through the different activities during the camp. And this actually made us learn and grow up not only as a cadet, but also a senior. It was really tiring on the first day as we have drill test and after that were given a rifle each and were tasked to protect it at all times.

In addition, we have to protect our own group flag, take care of the secondary ones and the eggs that were given to them. It was really a huge responsibility. Even though our group flag, the rifle and the bottles were taken by the SGT during the camp as we did not take care of them but we learnt our mistakes and be even more responsible for our own things. We were glad to be able to bond with the secondary ones and our squad mates. At first we felt really awkward with the Secondary 1s and we did not communicate a lot but gratefully we managed to talk at the later part of the camp during the hike and get to know each other better. It was a new camp experience for us as we were no longer juniors but seniors to the secondary ones and we need to set an excellent example for them.

The campfire was fun. We were afraid to make mistakes during the group performance but luckily it turn out well. We were also very pleased that we tried our best and managed to please the seniors as we were “high” enough to meet their expectations. We learnt to take more initiative, be more independent and learnt to take care of one another.  we learnt a lot more about taking care of our juniors and how to be a team player. Our personal goal at the camp was to take more initiative and we felt that we really managed to reach our goal. However, we can always improve for the better. Unit camp taught us that it is not easy to be a senior, but with enough determination and effort, we definitely can do it.

Unit camp has also brought the Sec 1s and 2s closer as there was the buddy system implemented and we felt as though we really bonded a lot more compared to the normal trainings as we were to interact  with them much more and come to learn each of their unique personalities .During our Ma'ams Time, we learnt that NPCC, as our cca, was about the people. AHNP was about the people in it, how we are like, whether we displayed the proper values. The people is what make AHNP unique and different from the other NPCC from other schools. Unit camp was not only a good learning experience for us, it will also be a fond memory we can look back to in the long run. We might have sacrificed a lot of sweat and tears for this camp, but it was all worth it and we are definitely looking forward to unit camp 2016.The Secondary Ones, on the other hand, felt that this camp was an enjoyable experience for all of us to learn new things and step out of our comfort zones.

Even though in overall the camp was quite tiring we enjoyed the many activities. This camp has also helped us bond more with our Secondary 2 seniors especially during the hike when we took time to get to know each other better. We also got to lean on each other in our groups; having only ourselves to depend on in this group, not only did we get closer to the Secondary 2s, we also bonded as Secondary 1s in the group. The camp has also taught us to be more responsible for our things as we had to take care of our belongings. With the circumstances we met and the mistakes we made, we have learnt to be more responsible of our belongings, on top of more values like perseverance, which was put to the test during the hike, not to mention challenging our physical limits. The camp has pushed both our mental and physical limits to make us stronger and more resilient.

The Night Games for both nights was extremely fun and well thought of. Not only did we learn to be innovative, we also learnt to communicate better as a squad. We felt the pride and accomplishment in putting effort and sweat into our work and would thus continue to further work hard in future trainings. We also got the opportunity to meet the Ma’ams for the first time. We feel that this is an important occasion as we spoke honestly about our opinions in many areas and got to know the Ma’ams better as they talked to us. It was a light-hearted conversation which allowed us to realise what this CCA means to us. After all, not many willingly go to this CCA but we are sure that all of us enjoy the time spent here and would treasure it.
