NPCC Inter-Unit quiz 2007

On 8 August 2007, our cadets participated in the NPCC Inter-Unit quiz and this is one of their reflections.

We were lucky to enter the the finals of this prestigious competition even though this is the first time we took part in it. Our results for the preliminary round put us in the 8th position and also into the finals. It was the first time we got into the finals of a major NPCC competition. The members of my team were SGT Ashley, SGT Valerie, CPL Ngik Hiong, SGT Li Jing and of course, myself. O.C. Miss Poh and Pei Yi ma'am accompanied us there.

Being our first time, we did not know what type of questions are going to come out while other older units knew. This gave them an advantage over us. Miss Poh explained to us that the main reason for going to the finals were to gain more experience and also to understand what type of questions were coming out so as to benefit the next batch of Anglican High cadets.

On the day itself, actual contestants have to be separated from the spectators and reserves and seated together with the other nine teams from other schools. Everyone from the other schools was seen carrying thick sets of notes as compared to our five pages of notes. Finally, the competition was started and we took our seats on the stage. The first part of the competition was on NPCC; it was Multiple Choice Questions(M.C.Q.) based and teams would have to write their answers (A,B,C or D) on the white boards provided and flash the answer when the time was up. After that was the MCQ round based on SPF and general knowledge. During that round, the group sitting in front of us kept cheating by looking at our answers. Nevertheless, we did not report it as it would affect the entire competition.

Next up was the speed round were each group was given a set of questions to answer within a time limit. Schools were tested according to alphabetical order which causes our school to go first. The first question clearly stumped us and SGT Ashley asked if we could skip that question and move on to the next one. The answer from the organisers was "No" so we spent a really long time at that question, causing us to be short changed. Later on, other groups all got to skip questions they do not know the answers to. We were terribly depressed by such an unfair treatment by the organisers.

We got the sixth position in the end. Our trophies were small and we had a terrible time there.
However, we were still proud that we have beaten so many other experienced schools to even reach the finals. For that, we should be happy already
