AHS Open House 2007

On 24 November 2007, our cadets manned the NPCC booth at Anglican High School Open House 2007 and this is one of their reflections.

On 24th November, the Saturday after the PSLE results were released, Anglican High School launched an open house for primary school students going to Secondary 1 in 2008 to visit. It was a platform to enable the student to understand the school better to make a good choice in selecting schools; after all, it will be their 2nd home for the next 4 years.

Uniformed groups (U.G.s) were required to set up booths in the parade square to "entice" potential students and their parents to join Anglican High. The open house would be from 8 am till 11 am, hence we had to fall in at 7 am for preparations. On the day before, we stacked up tables for the booth layout, before hanging up a banner.

24th November was a busy day, we reached school at 7 am to prepare the booth for viewing. We took out all our awards and medals which we have won earlier in the year, and display items such as the rifle, baton, NPCC flag, drill cane etc. Busy as bees, we had our Secondary 1 cadets paste up photograph boards, which would be displayed at the booth too. While we proceeded setting up the booth with the displays in place, Secondary 2 cadets practiced rifle and baton drills, which was to be showcased to the new students; Secondary 1 cadets field cooked for the sampling of the guests. A mannequin was put on with the uniform, complete with prestigious badges.

Soon, it was 8 am, and guests streamed in like water, accompanied by student councilors. Some of us walked around with weapons, attracting them to our booth. The Secondary 2 cadets were enthusiastic about explaining the various aspects of NPCC; and quite a number of guests looked impressed:D. Also, many magazines were given out to enrich the guests of NPCC knowledge, while explanations by own own cadets were interesting, spiced up with humour.

Overall, it was a day of "mock-orientation" to enable us to be able to explain well to the Secondary 1s of 2008 in the near future. We were proud of the booth as we had spent much time and effort in decorationg and postitioning the booth. It too, was a medium of bonding among the cadets in the unit while setting up the place for viewing.
