Teachers Day 2007: Precision Drill Squad Performance

On 30 September 2007, our cadets came up with an entertaining PDS performance in commemoration of Teachers' Day to show our gratitude to our teachers. This is one of the reflections from our participants.

Right after the National Day Parade in school, the Secondary 3 cadets attempted to persuade both Mervyn Sir and Pei Yi ma'am to teach us how to do rifle precision drills. We succeeded and finally got to fulfill our long-awaited wish to spin the rifle, do steps which we have not tried before.

After learning a few steps and sequences, we perfected them and finally got them right. We were proud of ourselves, being able to do it in a few tries. Some of us even tried to do tougher steps on our own such as rifle spins. Once everyone could do the basic steps, Mervyn Sir and Pei Yi ma'am taught us the rifle cross, rifle throws, rifle spins etc. We spent the rest of the day perfecting the art of "playing with rifles".

During water-break time, and we started discussing about having a P.D.S. performance for the teachers, especially dedicated to O.C. Miss Aline Poh for putting in so much effort for the unit to soar to greater heights. The only available day for performance would be on the day of Teachers' Day celebration; the auditions would be on the Saturday 2 weeks later, which meant that if we really wanted to perform, we would have to train very hard for long hours. All of us agreed that we should take it as an opportunity to showcase what we have learnt.

We voted on who was to perform for that occasion, based on the availability of the cadet. It filtered through until a team of 10 people was formed, including SGT Wenxin, SGT Li Jing, CPL Ngik Hiong, SGT Wan Ling, SGT Jia-Min, SGT Sheena, SGT Leona and I; there were 2 reserves, SGT Jian Qiong and CPL Yan Ling. Through countless practices of long hours, we learnt new sequences cheorographed by Mervyn Sir; complimented by a song choosen by Pei Yi ma'am. With that, we practiced over and over again for perfection.

On the day of celebration, we did what we did usually, and ended off with letter-bearers bearing the words, "HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY". O.C. Miss Poh was surprised and we achieved our aims: 1)performance for Miss Poh and 2)to have fun while practicing. When it actually ended, it felt sort of weird, as it was a routine we had been used to. It also marked the closure of the 1st P.D.S. team in the unit, and we felt a tinge of sadness. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the whole process of doing rifle drills and performing for our teachers.
