Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course 2007
On 24 June 2007, our cadets participated in the Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course for the first time. The following is one participant’s reflection.
一
Being a relatively new unit, this was the first time Anglican High had Sec 3s to go for this course. It was a 3-day course and held at Bedok South Secondary School. As it was the first time our unit participated in area-based courses, our officers were eager for us to do our best and create a good impression of the Anglican High Corps. Naturally, we were on our best behaviour throughout these 3 days.
We arrived punctually on the first day (and also the rest), and there was a C.I. who had a list of our groupings. I was in squad 3 along with CPL Valerie.
We started off the day with lectures on the basic stuff of NCO-ship, essentially the objectives, bearing, communication skills, etc. Then, we had a Drill MOI (methods of instruction) session, followed by cheers and songs, followed by the last round of lectures and a debrief for the day.
The second day started off with falling in and singing the NPCC march. Next was a campcraft MOI session. Two people would pair one and one will do the demonstration of the knot or lashing while the other goes around the group to ensure that the others understand.
This was followed by preparation for the competition tomorrow and lunch.
After that, we took a quiz on"what you would take along to the moon" and more lectures, and lastly, debrief at the end.
It was the last day and most of us came down early to practice for our competitions later in the day.
First up was the drill competition and each squad was to take dressing for uniform bearing grading. After that would be the squad's own showcase of their fancy drills or just drills. One squad did fancy drills with umbrellas while another group had 2 cadets who knew PDS and wow-ed everyone with it while the rest of their squad just marched behind them.
Then we changed and got ready for the campcraft competition. Our squad did a mini gadget while other squads did a swing (which was so unstable that it toppled), a bath and a garbage bag holder.
Finally, it was followed by the games competition which allowed us to know new games to play with our unit and to enjoy ourselves after three days of gruelling lectures.
We had a prize presentation to each group's best cadet and the overall best cadet.
