Heritage Trail 2007

On 11 August 2007, our cadets organised Heritage Trail 2007 and this is one of their reflections.

In accordance to the heritage badge scheme, units are supposed to come up with their own heritage trails and also take part in it. The secondary threes were put in charge of recce-ing, planning of worksheets and questions.

First, we would have to recce the route ourselves to note down for possible dangers or activities that can be carried out at each stop. My recce group was the largest and also the group that covered the most stops. We checked out sites such the Tan Kim Seng Fountain, Lim Bo Seng Memorial, Fort canning park, raffles landing site and lastly, the former supreme court. We would take pictures as documentation and also learn more about Singapore's history along the way. Other sites also include the civilian war memorial, St. Andrews Cathedral and also the yummy part of the trail, the trying of traditional or famous food at lau par sat.

After compiling everything and planning the routes, we were ready to go!
All station masters met earlier on the afternoon of the 5th of November, at city hall MRT station for a final briefing and we went to look for our separate stations. My first station was the raffles landing site where I sat down on the bench and waited for the groups to arrive. The road block for this station was to imitate the statue and take a picture.

The other station was the fort canning park station A, also known as the lighthouse. Groups are supposed to find out how tall the building is and also create a cheer about lighthouses while we would record it down using a video camera.

We had a lot of fun during this trail, be it during the recce session or during the actual trail. It allows groups to have fun, run about, learn about the Singapore history and also to be tested on their knowledge and others. Leaders of groups will have to organise their station orders so as to finish off all ten stations as soon as possible. Members also encourage and help one another whenever they get lost or when they cannot complete. I felt that this was a truly enriching experience that was awarded to us by completing this badge scheme.
